Pg 022: Generalists vs. specialists
Education
The real world rewards a specialist more than it rewards a generalist.
The "school world" does it backwards. The school world rewards the generalist -- the valedictorian -- the student is great in all subjects. Meanwhile, the mechanic student in shop class who became an expert gets no recognition.
Yet, when my car is stranded on the side of the interstate, I do not need the valedictorian, I need that specialist. And, the real world rewards the specialist more than the generalist.
Valedictorians are fine, just as generalists are fine. But let’s never forget the value of that specialist who put safe tires on your car, or installed the electrical system in your home, or drove that ambulance to the ER.
The real world rewards a specialist more than it rewards a generalist. Let's not get that backwards. Praise the specialist.
