Pg 011: Forming, storming, nroming, performing

Homeschooling

It appears there are stages the family goes through if they begin homeschooling with older children.

  1. Forming
  2. Storming
  3. Norming
  4. Performing

Forming: getting the things together to do the job  (e.g., notifications, curriculum, supplies, and other necessities).

Storming:  the period when the family makes crucial adjustments, hammering out the frustrating details-- expectations, schedules, conflict resolutions, ground rules -- and deciding what’s necessary, what’s good enough, and what’s great.

Norming:  practicing and refining all the concepts learned in the previous stages. Reaching a state of “normal.”

Performing:  actually seeing the fruit of the work, the peace that is brought about by removing the previous stressors. This is the period during which things actually seem to make sense and the real work gets done.

NOTE: I thank David Colfax for introducing me to this concept back in the 1980’s.
