Pg 115: Follow the money

Education

Average per pupil cost for public education in America hovers around $7,000 per student.

That’s about what each school district receives for every pupil enrolled in their public schools. When a student goes to a private school, they lose the money for that student.  When a student is homeschooled, they lose the money for that student, too, because that student is not on the public school roster, not counted in their “inventory."

This might explain some states’ hostility toward homeschoolers and private schools.  Some states make it difficult -- yes, it is legal everywhere -- but some states make complying with the law intimidating and demanding.

At $7,000 per student, the State of Maine has about 5,000 homeschooled children.  That would bring the total financial loss to Maine schools to about $35,000,000 each year!

Is there any wonder school officials have “feelings” toward homeschoolers?
